Finally… I’m can geek again.

And I finally have Internet in my new house. It’s been a right ol’ nadger getting it sorted, and it’s not without its bugs, but it looks like I’m there. Cable and Wireless finally did the business and came out and connected my house up to my parents house, so I’m now on there line with a phone and everything. It seems there are issues whereby an ADSL modem can’t even be plugged in (yes plugged in, not connected…) anywhere else on the line otherwise I get dropped. And the networking involved to get two computers, a network printer, a switch, a P-I-T-A modem and a wireless AP talking to each other is frankly scary. But hey, I’m networked, I’m wireless and I’m internetted. Won’t ask for much more than that.

The one that got away.

Hooked 3 fish last night. One of them was easily the biggest I’ve ever caught. The first two were a small black bream and a decent size (maybe 3lb) pollack. The 3rd one, well he was much bigger, but no idea what make and how big because as I got him to the shore, he broke free. And I caught nothing after that. Judging by the weight on the line and the way he struggled though, he was big. Inevitably went back to his mates and told them all to scarper. But still. Fish tally is now officially 7, with the rankings something like:

Pollack: 2
Horse Mackerel: 2
Garfish: 2
Black Bream: 1

I’m also experimenting with a leger line on the other rod, but that was unsuccessful first time out. Wait and see.

Shooting star

I tried a spot of night-fishing last night. Well really it was more of a last ditch effort to “please God let me catch a sodding fish” but anyway. Given the state of the tides at the moment, the ideal time to fish is about 2-3am. Which is obviously in the dark. But it’s no problem as I have some funkadelic float add-ons that make the float visible.

I tell you, though, there’s nothing that will mess with your eyes than watching a small fluorescent yellow dot in the near pitch black at 2am. I found my eyes really began to play games on me, both in terms of the float disappearing (when it hadn’t) or when three of them suddenly appeared (when there was still just one) or weird things happening in your peripheral vision, notably, which I’m attributing largely to the horror-movie-esque setting, was people, ghost and ghoulies appearing left and behind me, ready to eat my soul (sole?) and feed me to the sharks. Of course none of that happened, and I got home, gone 330am, unharmed, if a little chilled.

The weather is remarkably changeable here. One minute it’s blowing a gale with waves lashing at your feet, to a minute later where it’s beautifully calm. The fog comes in quickly, but it takes no more than a rebaiting of your hook and the sky is crystal clear, with twinkling stars like diamonds on black velvet lightyears above you. And maybe it was just my eyes playing up, but I swear I saw a shooting star. (And no, it wasn’t the red flashing ones, I’m not getting confused with airplanes.)

So all in all, a good night.

I feel like I’m forgetting something.

Right. Fish. I caught two! One wee nipper of a Horse Mackerel but one absolutely stonking Silver Pollack. I’m definitely getting the hang of it! We ate them tonight, and frustratingly, the smaller Horse Mackerel (not to be confused with a regular mackerel because they’re apparently no relation) tasted better, but there was less of him. Including the two Garfish I caught today, that takes the fish tally to 5 now!

Euphism for a small willy

Defjam Comedy Hits, No.1, Some random black female comedian, in reference to a bloke with a small willy shagging a fat bird:

“It’s like feeding a tic-tac to a whale”.

Comedy genius.

Wow. And just, wow.

I’ve been away the past week in England getting stuff done, and yeah, I had a bunch of stuff to talk about, but, frankly, it all pails in significance compared to what the England cricket team has achieved. I’m not even going to discuss it, there’s plenty out on the web about it all, but I just wanted to say well done England and “in yer face” to the Australians. I will say though that the most pleasurable bit of the whole thing is the spirit in which it was all played, the way in which both teams were almost rooting for each other, the way Shane Warne shook KP’s hand after he scored his Ashes-winning 150, the way the two teams got pissed with each other after every game. Well done to the players for being such wonderful representatives of a truly remarkable and exciting game. Footballers could learn a thing or two.

Chhhuuoommme oowwwwwnnn.

(P.S. I put three new Fingers episodes up.)

Paypal phishing scam

I saw a new Paypal scam today. Well new to me in that I hadn’t seen it before. The variation being that this time you get an email saying that so and so has sent you some money, click this link to view the details, you get taken to an authentic looking Paypal copy site, login and hey presto, they have your account details.

What is amusing though is when you give it a bunch of fake details. Give it a go – just make up anything.
