Technical genius

I had to update some of my network gear yesterday – I bought an all-in-one D-Link ADSL wireless router jobby to replace the outdated 3Com modem and Belkin wireless router I had been using. No real complaints yet, it plugged in and worked fine with my Mac, XP/2000 and Linux computers.

But why oh why oh why is the “ADSL connected” light a flashing green light? When every other “I’m working fine” light is a steady green. The ADSL connected is flashing? What sense does that make?

Shorties are ideal marriage material

I forget where I read this:

When looking for a husband, what do most women look for in a man? It seems the vertically challenged are the ideal match for women who want to settle down, according to scientific research. Women prefer taller men to have a fling with, while short men are better marriage material, according to psychologist Ingrid Collins.

“Short men are less arrogant and try harder,” she said.

She says that because taller men were important on the hunter and warrior scale, they are “naturally more bolshy”. Shorter men are often bullied at school, according to the psychologist. But how on earth does this make them more appealing to the opposite sex?

“They make up for their lack of inches by cultivating a good sense of humour,” she writes in Cosmopolitan magazine.

“If you want to be treated like a queen, look down.”

At about 5′6″, I couldn’t agree more with this… come on ladies, you know what to do… ;)

In other news…

gary glitter takes it up the...

Gary Glitter’s in the shit again with more child abuse allegations. But if he’s found guilty, he’s going to be well and truly up the creek with nothing in the way of a paddling implement.

A police officer in Vung Tua said: “Having sex with a 12-year-old girl, regardless of whether he had her consent, is still considered child rape under Vietnamese law.”

“Obscene acts with a child” can lead to 12 years imprisonment while child rape carries the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad.

Serve him right for having such ridiculous eyebrows.

Nottingham to Bideford, via France!

This is something I saw on tonight’s Top Gear. A viewer used the RAC Routeplanner to plot a journey from Nottingham to Bideford (N.Devon). The only stipulation was that they didn’t want to use any motorways.

And what did the intelligent, all-singing, all-dancing, make-it-easy-for-you route planner suggest? This:

nottingham to bideford via france

That’s right – Nottingham to Bideford via Ireland and then France! Incredible.

Good News

I have just found out that a paper I submitted for publication in Computers & Geosciences has informally been accepted (whatever that means). The paper describes a geostatistical optimisation technique using anisotropy ratios for predicting directional variation in remotely sensed imagery. Watch this space for the formal acceptance!
