We all know about the US’s appalling Global Climate record, in as much as they couldn’t give a toss. In their eyes, Kyoto Shhmyoto. The other day, I stumbled across a climate change website from leading US environmental concern group Environmental Defense. There’s plenty in there to mislead you in to thinking that Americans actually do care about the state of the planet. I was pleasantly surprised by both the design of the Fight Global Warming site and the code (yep, it’s tableless, although neither its HTML nor its CSS validates) in addition to some of the information available on it.
As I was reading through it, though, specifically this page, I was confronted by a surprising piece of editorial liberty. In the section on appliances, they allude to the fact that stuff that is plugged in still uses electricity, but there solution to this is to use a power strip. I’m surprised that they don’t explicitly say that appliances on standby use a fuckload of energy. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.
We know that the majority of Americans are a little sagaciously challenged and in many cases need it spelled out for them plain as day. So why did the website not say: turn your shit off if you’re not using it ? It doens’t make sense to me. It’s almost as if the editors of that website know the problems of appliances switched on, but love their remote control just a bit too much. I think the softly softly approach is going to get them nowhere nowhere quickly quickly.
I just can’t work out if this is a joke or not, or maybe it’s actually a children’s TV series or something. But for the less mature amongst us, this a graphical treat. Get the wallpaper for your compi now!
