OK, so the whole University didn’t burn down, but a fairly substantial portion has. It’s not connected with my department there, but a good friend of mine is based in that building. Having just spoken to him, it seems he may have lost all the work he has done in the last 2.5 years towards his PhD. He had backups; but of course they were in his office with his computer. It’s totally harsh.

Yeah, I reckon if I was the building, I’d be pretty pissed off too.
So let it be a warning – if you have important data for which you keep backups – make sure the backups are kept well away from the original!
Wow that sucks. I’d sure be pissed if that happened to me. Hope you had backups yourself!
I wonder what it’s like losing 2.5 years work?
When Word used to crash on me and I thought I’d lost a days work because I forgot to click save it turned out that it only took me half an hour to retype because it was all fresh in my mind and the main obstacle of thinking it through had been done.
Hopefully your friend’s 2.5 years work will be a bit like this, but on a larger scale? Maybe I’m just clutching at straws…
well, how pissed you’d be when you have backups in seperate place than the originals & both of them are destroyed? it doesn’t happen often but its not unheard of, the probability is still there!!
that’s why I think that online backup services are good, you just need to have a fast internet connection for that!!
Ouch, that really does suck.
