You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
blood sucking vampire slaying
Blade 1 is a classic. Blade 2 is a classic pile of shit. This final instalment of the Marvel Blade threesome is fortunately more like the first than the second.
The vampires have resurrected the ultimate in their line... Dracula. Thinking that he's the only one who can kill Blade, they bring him back from his sleep to try and hunt him out. Meanwhile, Blade has become wanted by the FBI, but fortunately a group of Blade wannabes (known as the Nightstalkers) have assembled themselves to help him kick some vampire ass. Which involves the creation of a vampire potion which, when fused with the blood of Dracula (wasn't it lucky they discovered this right at the time that Dracula was woken up?) will kill all vampires instantly. Lucky.
Blade and the Nightstalkers go hunting for Dracula to finally rid the world of vampires once and for all.
Blade 1 was, I think, the second DVD I owned. I still have it, because, in my eyes, it's a classic. Blade 2 was a complete load of old tosh, and I only watched this one for completeness. I wasn't expecting much, and actually got more than I bargained for. The direction has definitely gone back to more of the first than the second, which is a good thing, though they made some curious choices along the way. Apart from several obvious plotholes, the inclusion of people like Ryan Reynolds (from Van Wilder) as the fast talking quip-making Nightstalker was a brave gamble. He's funny in places, but for this sort of film, it doesn't feel quite right. Jessica Biel is a great choice, because, let's face it, she's hot and she's gonna look good in anything. Especially romping about in skimpy latex, beating the hell out of the vampire baddies.
The action scenes are good, and the new and improved weapons they used are sufficiently outrageous and comic book to fit in well. The 5.1 soundtrack is subwoofer heaven, which will shake the floorboards for all to hear. Dracula is a big hard bastard, but, ultimately meets his demise.
It's not a great film, but a huge improvement over the second. In fact, I'd recommend a Blade evening and watch all three in the trilogy. Although you may choose to skip over the second one.
Watch out for an appearance from Triple H, yet another WWF wrestler turned actor.
