You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
It's a fucking weird world
As with most films, I'm struggling to remember why I rented this one. I have a feeling that it's because it stars Isabella Rossellini, an actress whom I was only familiar with through her cameo in an episode of Friends. I had heard, however, that she spent most of the film in the buff, which is probably what prompted me to rent it.
I haven't got a scooby-doo. Well, I have, but it's weird. A kid comes back from Uni to see his Dad who is in hospital. Whilst around he finds a human ear. He hands it to the police but when he's told to not ask any further questions he decides to take the investigation further, with the help of Sandy (Dern) who just happens to be the police chiefs daughter.
So anyway, she tells him about some woman who lives in an apartment block. He decides to break in and hide where he observes her life. And it all goes fucked up from there. Not only is she a complete nutjob, but she's also being raped by a total nutjob who has kidnapped her husband and kid. But, being the nutjob she is, when she finds the random kid in her apartment, she tries to have sex with him. But he's supposed to be in love with Sandy.
Exactly.
It's a pretty intriguing film, but it is totally weird. It's very "A Clockwork Orange" and a little bit One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Rossellini does spend most of her time in the buff, as promised, but to be honest, she's not all that special.
Dennis Hopper is good as the psycho nutjob who likes to say FUCK a lot but other than that it's all just a bit too weird for my liking.
If you like old, very dark, very twisted, very sadistic , weirdo films, then this is for you. If you're on your "first night in with a possible new girlfriend" then this is definitely not for you.
