You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
better than the first one
Sequels have an uncanny habit of being shite. Especially if the first one was good, any films that follow are often not worth bothering with. In this case though, it's more of the same, and actually, works a bit better.
We pick up from "Identity" - Bourne (Damon) is in Goa with his wife/girlfriend (Marie)... living a happy life, hiding from all the crap from his past. Until one day when someone tries to kill him but accidentally kills Marie instead. Oops. So he goes off after the people who are trying to set him up for the murder of a couple of CIA operative, who had a hand in stealing a bunch of money and some docs on some Russian dude.
He wanders around various European city, evades capture on more than one occasion, and figures out a little more about who he is, where he came from and and parts of his memory (like the killing of a couple of people in Berlin which was his first job).
The tension is good - it just follows on fairly neatly from the first one. This feels better - the screenplay is neater, and Bourne on his own works more smoothly than trying to carry Marie around with him. He's still on a mission to find out who he is, but he's also got to protect himself from a bunch of people who have no idea who he is but want to kill him, as well as a bunch of people who do know he is but also want to kill him.
This is film #2 out of a possible 4.. #3 is scheduled for release in 2007. As films, they work quite well... they've got a James Bond feel to them, and are good action flicks. Just don't expect them to be anything like the books, 'cos they ain't...
