You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

the overview

References to Ben Folds Five songs aside, this is one bizarro film. But it has Emilie de Ravin in it, which is a good reason to watch a film.

the plot:

Brendan is a kid at high school struggling to deal with his girlfriend (Emilie De Ravin) leaving him. When she out of the blue calls him and asks for his help, he gets suspicious and starts to investigate. His investigations lead him deep in to the drug culture of his school and the untimely demise of his ex-gf.

the verdict:

It's SO weird. But in a good way. Kind of. The lead character Brendan, is supposed to be a ballsy no-shit kind of a guy, who likes fighting and isn't scared of anyone. Eventually you start to believe this, but the main problem is that the casting of Levitt in the role is difficult to accept because he just flat-out looks like a geek. Maybe thats part of the challenge?

But then, there's so much going on that it's quite hard to keep up. I know I'm getting old and all, and I'm no longer (if I ever was) really down with the kids, but there was so much "lingo" in use that I got easily confused.

Add to that, some fairly curious characters, who are living the real gangsta life (except they kiss their mummy) and it all gets a bit crazy.

I'm sure that was the point of the film, that is, to question some of the stereotypes you see in film and wonder if it's just all a load of crap.

I'm not sure, but either way, it's quite a good film, but it's ultimately dissatisfying.

tell me, does my bum look big in this?
