You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Bridget Jones - Edge of Reason

the one line review:

the first one... again

the overview

The first Bridget Jones was alright. Well in as much, as it was essentially any other Hugh Grant film, with a few other people in it. This is essentially the first one, made again, with some different plotlines, but following the exact same premise. So if you liked the first, you'll probably like this.

the plot:

Bridget Jones (Zellwegger) is still dating Mr. Perfect (Firth). Until her friends convince her he's cheating on her. Cue break up, and Mr. Imperfect (Grant) back. Cue nasty event that requires help from Mr. Perfect. He says he did it to help, not because he likes her, she finds out otherwise. Cue happy ending.

Alright, I missed out a load of guff in the middle, but it's only the same stuff you got in the first one (Grant and Firth having a really girlie scrap, a gratuitous view of Zellwegger's big-pants covered arse, some serious wine and cigarette abuse, random cringe-making humour moments). Blah.

the verdict:

The film stands well enough on its own, so if you hadn't seen the first, it wouldn't matter too much. Though you'd miss out on exactly why Hugh Grant is the bad guy, and Colin Firth is Mr. Wonderful. But there's nothing new here. It's a cute romantic comedy, that follows all the rules, does all the usual tricks, and doesn't inspire much of anything in anyone.

It's enjoyable enough if you're about 40, but if like me, you're not, go out and rent something violent.
