about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

the overview

I rented this from Blockbuster without knowing anything about it. It was free, so I thought why not. Given that I didn't pay anything for it, I think I got my money's worth. I'm not sure though.

the plot:

Ryan (Evans) is a jock loverboy who's been dumped by his fittie girlfriend (Biel). When she agrees to let him do something for her, he inevitably cocks it all up, as, while he's on his way to do it, Jessica Martin (Basinger) calls him on his "cell" phone telling him she's been kidnapped by a bunch of nasty people (led by Statham) and is being held captive. It's up to him to help her out.

He drives all over the place, speaking on various "cell" phones, trying to figure out the mystery behind her kidnap. Turns out that Jessica's husband took a video of a bunch of LA cops robbing and shooting a bunch of drug dealers, and now said bent cops want the tape back.

It's a race against time to expose the cops for who they are, before they all get dead.

the verdict:

You need to give this film a chance to get going. About 15 minutes in I was wondering what the heck I was watching, given how the acting was so poor and hammy. In fairness, it turns out OK... it's quite tense and edgy in many places and keeps the suspense going for most of the film. Ultimately, it's totally predictable, but then which films nowadays aren't. The acting isn't great, and Basinger is looking old. She's still a MILF though. Phwooar.

Oh, and Jessica Biel's in this one too. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon flick.
