about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

the overview

Well, 46, but you know. Tim Robbins is great, this has the potential to be great, but it didn't do it for me.

the plot:

To be honest, it's all a bit spooky. The world as we know it, well, some of the world, is now controlled in a weird futuro-communist-dictator style you'll do this, live here, not do that sort of a way. Very 1984. For the people who live "inside" anyway.

Tim Robbins is an investigator, sent in to check out a fraud at one of the factories that deals with issuing the insurance you need to do virtually anything (travel, fart, breathe...). Trouble is, he finds out whosdoinit but she's a bird and he fancies her.

the verdict:

This is one of those artsy fartsy moody films which is more about the point than the actual film. It's got a real Bladerunner feel to it, but also The Island, and frankly, bits of a lot in there. As a result, it feels quite disjointed and fails to make an overall statement about what it's doing.

Tim Robbins is good as the quasi-psychic-"empathist" even though he ends up fancying a chick who's got share and is more lesbian/boy than hottie. But that's the point - it's a film about love and doing what the heart says and what you want to do and rebelling and blah blah blah.

Maybe I'm not mature enough to appreciate something like this (I like Dumd and Dumber, for instance) but for someone like me, it was just a bit too weird and hard to follow.
