about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Creep

the one line review:

as scary as taking a trip on the underground

the overview

To some people, that might be kinda scary, to others, not so much. This was an interesting premise, but it failed to deliver.

the plot:

Kate fancies George Clooney so tries to meet him at a party. Whilst waiting for a tube, she falls asleep and wakes up to find she is locked in Charing Cross station. But she's not alone, because some creep maniac is flitting around killing stuff.

the verdict:

Frank Potente is quite fit, but her German accent is really better suited to low budget porn. She does the scared horror girlie quite well, but it would have been better had she taken her top off.

The film builds tension up quite nicely in places, but invariably lets it sink away again and doesn't capitalise on it. It has the odd jumpy moment, but there's nothing unexpected here. It's a cross somewhere between The Cave and Saw, mixing the dark/underground/unidentified killer aspect with the pure gore fucked in the head psycho aspect. It's moderately successful. And the underground killing beastie was obviously Gollum's understudy in the Lord of the Rings.

Whether or not we care why the beastie is killing people is somewhat incidental (there's some relationship with father gone wrong story in there somewhere) but ultimately this film is about the chase and escape thing, and the beastie's ultimate demise. Which, when you're expecting electrocution, to see its throat ripped out was a little unexpected.

But that's about it in this tired and fairly boring so-called horror. About the most enjoyable bit is the flick's co-lead, George, who will be best known for his role as Rory Breaker in Lock, Stock...

"Now do you understand? Cos if you don't, I'll kill ya!". Watch that instead. Shame really, because it's got some good British actors, is obviously a low budget flick and the potential is huge. It just doesn't see it through to the end.
