You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Cry Wolf

the one line review:

teen flick meets the ring. but not really.

the overview

I've got to stop picking films soley on the basis of their trailer. Trailers generally make films out to be a lot better than they are, and this was no exception. I don't even remember seeing the trailer to this film, but for some reason it got rented.

The bad omen though was when I put the DVD in and the trailers, I actually saw the trailer for this film and was thinking to myself that that looked like a shocking film. And then the film was that film.

That's atrocious English. I hope the point was made.

the plot:

Owen (Morris) joins a new school and makes friends with the rebel kids, who have this great plan to make up a story about a serial killer trying to kill a bunch of kids in the school. Only the story turns out to be true. Or is it a hoax? Or is it true?

Well that's the point of film.

Get it?

the verdict:

It's pretty bad. Morris (who ironically and somewhat spookily looks a LOT like my friend Bob) is passable as the lead, and Lindy Booth does well as the rebel-nice-girl-actually-a-psycho lead-ette. She's pretty fit too which is OK.

Apart from that, it's pretty dire. It's extremely predictable, it's not tense and it's too Scream-meets-The Ring, which isn't a good thing. Scream was pretty good, The Ring was pretty good - this isn't.

There's nothing new. A bunch of kids run about joking about a killer who may or may not be trying to kill people. There's an attempt at a good ending, but it's too obvious to have any real impetus.

And you'll spend most of the film wondering if one of the teachers at the school is actually Bon Jovi.

(It is, by the way.)

Don't rent this film.
