You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Fatal Attraction

the one line review:

why did Catherine Zeta Jones marry him?

the overview

As a young man, I expect Michael Douglas was an attractive man. I say expect, because as a bloke, I'm forbidden from recognising other blokes in terms of their handsomeness. But why, when he was old and past it, CZJ ever fell for him, I'll never know.

That has nothing to do with the fact that this is a shocking film.

the plot:

Michael Douglas is a bloke whose wife goes out of town so he has an affair with some random slapper at this work (Close). When he tells her that she's a bit too much of a munter for there to be anything more than a quick shag, she takes it a little personally and turns into a total psycho hosebeast.

the verdict:

Perhaps in its day this was a classic film.... all the cheating, the sex, the drama. But sadly in our decade, it doesn't have any of it.

For starters, its totally unrealistic. Even when the film was made, Glenn Close was a total minger. Douglas's screen wife was better looking than close, so it's unlikely the affair would ever happen.

It's unrealistic - after their first coital encounter, the two affairees go out Salsa dancing. No. No. No. I know Douglas is a classic gentleman or something, but no bloke is immune to sleeping after sex. It's natural. And even if he can make it as far as the balcony for a quick smoke, there's no bloody way he's going out dancing.

The rest of the film barely warrants a mention. Close is quite good as the psycho mistress who doesn't like getting dumped, but that's probably because we're used to her Cruella da Ville (or however the heck you spell it) role fro 101 Dalmations.
