You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Harry Potter & The Prizoner of Azkaban

the one line review:

harry and the crew hit puberty

the overview

I'm only watching the Harry Potter films so that I don't have to read the books. I might be persuaded to admit that they're so far quite entertaining, although I wouldn't go so far as to say I actually like them. What's obvious in this film is that they've tried to sex up the relationship between the groups foremost threesome - Harry, Ron and Hermione. I'm quite expecting next to be Harry Potter and the Dominatrix' Layer, or Harry Potter and the Double Spitroast.

the plot:

Silvius Black has escaped from prison in Azkaban (he is said prisoner). He was sent there for the murder of Harry's parents. Turns out he didn't do it, and on escaping the prison, the first thing he does is hunt out Harry to try and settle the unfinished business.

the verdict:

Harry Potter films are like giant jigsaws - the directors tend to spend an hour and half setting up all the pieces, and the last 25 minutes just filling in the gaps. It's quite a nice tactic that works quite well in creating a bit of tension.

What was most obvious in this film though was how they've tried to develop the relationship between Harry and Hermione, but ultimately Hermione and Ron. There's a lot of touchy feely moments, almost frighteningly so. Almost too much. Having said that, Emma Watson is a lot less irritating as Hermione, and with full respect to any laws that I may be impeding by the following statement, she would definitely get it (if she's old enough. Ahem.).

The story of Harry's parents is the main thing at issue throughout the books, so as someone who hasn't read any of them, I can only imagine that it's a theme that is and will be continued through the whole series. No doubt Harry's parents aren't actually dead, but I suspect such a revelation would be kept until the last book. And that is of course complete and total speculation.

Anyway, as HP films go, it's OK - probably not as good as the Chamber of Secrets, but certainly better than the Sorceror's Stone.

I won't recommend you watch it, because if you're into the HP franchise you'll be watching it anyway and if you're not yet, then you should start with the first one.

Deja vu, anybody?

is it in yet?
