about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

How High

the one line review:

this shit is the shit, motherfucker

the overview

From a purely rhetorical sense, I'm a big fan of "black man comedy" - the fast talking, quick jokes, usually derisory way of talking about people, Chris Rock, Richard Prior style. Things like Me Myself and Irene, Blue Streak and so on really have me tickled. And this in places achieves the same.

the plot:

2 stoners have a ghost friend which tells them all the answers to a test, and as a result, they blag their way into Harvard University. Hilarity and copious weed smoking ensues.

the verdict:

It's not a good film. Plotwise. The principle is fine, but there's nothing in it to make a film. That's not the point of it though, it's just an excuse for Method Man and Redman to make a spectacle of various cliched institutions. And smoke a pantload of weed.

There's plenty of funny moments in it (exploding pigeons included) and it'll keep you amused until its predictable outcome, but that's about it.

in the words of big willy... mmmm
