You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Just Friends

the one line review:

teeny chickyflick that's worth the time

the overview

I knew what to expect, and my expectations were suitable informed. That sentence doesn't make a lot of sense. But this film is good fun, with a host of decent actors who make it an enjoyable hour and a half or so.

the plot:

Chris Brander (Reynolds) was friends with Jamie Palamino in high school. He was fat, she was fit. He loved her, she didn't. He leaves school, gets thin, get's an attitude but doesn't find love. On a freak trip back to his home town, he bumps in to her again, and then tries his best to win her back.

the verdict:

It seems some of the teen flick genre actors either make it, or they don't. We've seen all these guys before - the excellent Ryan Reynolds of Van Wilder and curiously Blade 2/3 fame, Amy Smart of Road Trip fame, Chris Klein of American Pie fame and of course Anna Faris of Scary Movie fame.

This is a semi-serious teen flick effort, that actually works out nicely. It doesn't feel too cheap or too slapsticky, even though it's full of fat people, fart jokes and people falling over.

It's a nice combination of a lot of the sentiments of the main teen flicks, without being shite. And there's no question that Amy Smart is b-e-a-utiful, even though she sadly doesn't get her norks out in this (like she did in Road Trip).

Well worth a rent if you like this soppy teeny-flick happy-ending type stuff.
