about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

The Mad Max trilogy

the one line review:

waterworld without the water

the overview

Another series of films where the first was awesome, and the proceeding efforts didn't match up.

the plot:

Mad Max 1

We don't know why, but the world (well, Australia) has gone to pieces and a group of road police are trying to look after the highways. Max is one of said police persons. When his girlfriend and child are killed by some outlaws, he goes after some revenge.

Mad Max 2

We now find out why the world has gone to pieces - lots of war and... well, that's it. SO because of the war, fuel is scarce so the people who control the fuel, control everything. Max is loose on the highways, and involuntarily ends up helping a fuel processing plant from invasion from some outlaws.

Mad Max 3

More of the same - this time Max has to escape from jail, sort of, erm, well he has to fight something and... um. Well, I don't know.

the verdict:

Mad Max 1 is awesome, and on its own is a 4 star rating. But in the trilogy, parts 2 and 3 let it down. In 1, you don't really care why the shit has hit the fan - you just accept that it has, and enjoy the film. It's got a real Grand Theft Auto meets Gone In Sixty Seconds feel to it, which is fab.

The first thing you see in Part 2, is why the shit hit the fan. Which is annoying, really, because you don't really care. Films 2 and 3 have an obvious shift - 1 was about the highways and the cars and little else. 2 and 3 seem to have more emphasis on the world has gone wrong theme than the main part which was the muscle cars and insane stunts. 2 and 3 really are just Waterworld... without the water. (So world.)

If you like this sort of thing, watch 1, but I'd advise not bothering with 2 and 3. They're too dull.
