You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
Classic Jim Carrey action
I know some people really don't like Jim Carrey, and to that I say "ah sod ya then". No, really, each to his own. But I think he has got the comedy timing that a lot of people don't have. OK so he got typecast as soon as he stepped out as Ace Ventura, but that was still a quality film.
Me, Myself and Irene, is IMHO, one of his best yet.
It's a weird plot, to say the least. Charlie (Carrey) has developed a split personality disorder ever since his wife ran off with a 3ft dwarf. As he gradually goes madder and madder, one day his split (Hank) takes over. As a result Charlie is assigned a job (he is Rhode Island State Trooper) a job escorting a "criminal" (Zellwegger) to a police station in NY, while the RI police think of a way to sack him.
So, it's basically a road movie. He escorts her, drops her off. But of course, she isn't really a criminal, she has just been set-up by her vicious ex. When she finds this out, she seeks Charlie out for help. What ensues is a comedic road journey away, whilst Charlie pretty much falls in love with her but then so does Hank.
Doesn't get much more original than that...
This is great "sit back and prepare to laugh film". Even for the Jim Carrey haters out there, there is plenty in this one for you. Zellwegger is not only very sexy, but she's also very sexy in this. Seriously. There's also the case of Charlie's three sons, who happen to be a) enormous, b) black and c) very rude. So you get a buttload of black man jokes with a large amount of swearing and general larking about.
Classic moments involve a 12" pink dildo, Charlie and Hank fighting each other (so Jim fighting himself!) and other occasions where Carrey is just hilarious. Oh and let's not forget the "finger being shot off" incident.
Alright, it's a bit slapstick, but that is Carrey for you. If you liked Liar Liar, The Truman Show or even The Cable Guy, you will like this. And even if you didn't, you'll still enjoy this 'cos it's way better.
If you're not a Carrey fan, do yourself a favour and just rent it. It's well worth it.
