You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
a modern day Stand By Me
This won a bunch of awards, and from the trailer, promised to be an enjoyable flick. It wasn't really.
A bully in the school beats the crap out of a kid, so the kid's brother and friends devise a plan to place retribution on the bully. They take him on a boating trip, with the plan being of stripping him naked, then making him walk home. Of course it all goes wrong when the kid sparks it and the gang of boys have to figure out what to do.
It is an OK film, it's perfectly watchable. But it's just a bit too dull. It takes a long time to get started, which, considering it's only a 90 minute film, means the good bits are over way too quickly. The film's lead, Scott Methththltoocllcoiwicz is of EuroTrip fame, a truly diabolical film. And it's got Macauley Culkin's kid brother in it. Which probably says enough.
It has a Stand By Me, rights of passage feel to it, but Stand By Me is SO much better than this. If you're looking for kid psychology, we're all growing up, kind of film, go for Stand By Me, Sleepers, or maybe even Mystic River.
Worth a watch, if everything else in the video store is out.
