about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Monsters Inc

the one line review:

a real treat for the eye

the overview

This is only one of a very few films that I can repeatedly watch again and again and not lose interest in.

the plot:

Monsters live in Monstropolis where Monsters like Sully (voiced by John Goodman) scare children in the real world to generate energy. When the evil Randall Boggs (Buscemi) plots to kidnap a child to perform tests on a new way of extracting the scares from children, Sully and Mike Wazowski (Crystal) get themselves entwined to try and save the child, Boo.

the verdict:

It's incredible. Not only is the animation almost flawless, it's a pleasure of a film with fun for everyone. Even the most hardened ganster filmers will enjoy this and that's a promise. And anyone with more than a passing interest in animated films, like Shrek, Toy Story and Nemo, for example, well, I expect you will have already seen it.

The characterisation of Boo is the most endearing part of the film, and the relationship that spawns between her and Sully (an enormous green and purple monster, which she calls Kitty) is adorable.

The voicing of the characters is superb (listen out for John Ratzenberger aka Cliff from Cheers as the Yeti) and frankly, I can't find a way to fault it. Priceless animated fun.
