You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

The Passion of The Christ

the one line review:

jesus gets dead

the overview

I watched this for a number of reasons. Mainly because it was so controversial, I had to know what everyone was banging on about. And as someone who is not so much an atheist, as more of a person who is "without faith" (but not beyond the realms of believing), I had to find out what was going on.

the plot:

The film describes the events leading up to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It depicts the individuals involved in condemning him to death, and those that either stick by him, or deny him. It's not so much a plot as a story with a well known ending.

the verdict:

This isn't so much a film as a documentary. It's filmed well, and there are no holds barred. It's start fast, and the pace is maintained throughout. The events depicted are done so particularly brutally, and is not for the squeamish. The audio track is in Hebrew/Aramaic throughout, but fortunately the subtitles are nice and big so it's easy to follow.

I have a feeling that for those who are active Christians, that this will be a very moving and somewhat distressing film. For anyone who couldn't give a toss about any of it, then I suspect it'd be a total borefest. But if you're somewhere in the middle, where you've got an open mind and you're interested in the events, then this is worth a watch. It's almost one of those films that you really should see.

I wouldn't say it's a great "film", but equally, it's not really a film. As a "reconstruction" (if you will) of the events surrounding the death of Jesus, then it's an interesting insight.
