You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Rat Race

the one line review:

stupid stupid slapstick road trip

the overview

A big fan of Blackadder, I figured I really ought to check out how Rowan Atkinson does in films. Turns out, it's Mr. Bean, but Spanish.

the plot:

A stupidly rich casino owner (John Cleese) set a challenge to 8 groups of people to race across America to a train station in the middle of nowhere, where there's $2m in cash waiting for them. Cue a wacky races style jaunt across country with typically hilarious ensuing consequences.

the verdict:

It's a pretty awful film, but it's extremely fun and very entertaining. Each of the groups of people involved in the race have their problems and difficulties to get over, like cars blowing up, getting stripped naked and left in the desert, to hot hair balloons getting attached to cows, to becoming a Hitler impersonator. Usual stuff really. Rowan Atkinson does his best Spanish Mr. Bean impression, which is quite delightful, and the film has Road Trip stars Amy Smart and Breckin Meyer in it. She's fit, him not so much. Whatever floats your boat.

It's pretty dire slapstick comedy and has a horrendously wanky ending, but it's good fun for the rest of the time.
