You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Schindler's List

the one line review:

stunning true story

the overview

I didn't want to watch it - it's a film that you know is historical, you know it's in black and white, you know it's about the Holocaust... you have to be in the right mood for it. I was not in the right mood. Until about 10 minutes in when I forgot where I was and lost myself to the magic of this film.

the plot:

It's the true story of Oskar Schindler, a Czech business man who moves to Poland during the 2nd WW and sets up a factory exploiting the cheap price of Jewish labour. However, the factory turns out to be a lifesaver for some 1100 Jews who are spared the turmoil of concentration camps and gas chambers.

the verdict:

The film is long, but it's good value. I was glued to the chair for it's entirety - and it was a genuine shock when I was prompted to change discs halfway through. Liam Neeson is great as Schindler, but Ben Kingsley is even better as Itzhak Stern, Schindler's Polish counterpart.

The film is incredible - truly captivating, which is surprising considering the content. Hard to describe but unquestionably a film you must-see. Currently #6 on IMDB.com's all time top films. And rightly so.
