You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
welcome to sin city
Yet another comic book conversion style film, but this time with a very real feel to it, rather than the usual super power laden flying and hero saves the day kind of story.
The film is made up of a series of individual stories which attempt to be tied together as the events connect with each other. It's based mainly around Marv (Rourke) a big bloke who's badly disfigured who's one true love is killed by a prostitute eating weirdo (Elijah Wood). Marv goes on the hunt for her killer, taking him all round Basin City. Other story lines include Bruce Willis as a cop who is framed for the murder of the son of a wealthy man, who was about to rape Nancy (Jessica Alba).
It's a difficult plot to describe, but works quite nicely.
It's a strange film. It's filmed entirely in black and white, with the exception of the addition of some colourings, like blood that's white, bright red dresses and all kinds of other little touches.
It's filmed in the style of Pulp Fiction with lots of mini stories that tie in to each other (not surprising given that Quentin Tarantino guest-directs on it).
The whole film is quite dark, with prostitutes wielding machine guns, underworld mob boss type people, corrupt police and lots of death. There's also a nice Kill Bill-esque scene with a tiny girl who enjoys killing people who huge a samurai sword and throwing stars.
I've got to say that this film wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be, but that might be because it turned out to not be what I was expecting.
Enjoyable nonetheless, though I feel I might have been one bum too generous with it.
