You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
so-so horror flick
There are so many mediocre yawnfest horror flicks out there that after a while you become so accustomed to them that they're actually more effort than they're worth. This is much the same.
Kate Hudson is a social worker/carer who is employed to look after a chap who has had a stroke under strange circumstances and now can barely move. She's to be a live in carer, living alongside the guy's wife. She's given a key (yep, a Skeleton Key) - a key that will open every room in the house.
She starts snooping around the house and starts to find all sorts of clues as to the bloke's demise - and they all point to signs of true nastiness.
Kate Hudson has a look - that sort of face, that makes you think you've seen her in a bunch of films already. But if you look at her profile on IMDB then she's only been in a handful of stuff, and none of it is particularly memorable. I saw her in Alex & Emma, a tooty-fruity chick flick, that I actually seem to remember enjoying. She's definitely a hottie and is about the only good thing in this film (especially as she does have a habit of 'frolicing' in not many clothes).
The actual horror side to the film, well, it's pretty poor. Of course the house is haunted (ish) by the ghosts (ish) of two servants who used to work there and who practiced hoodoo (a variant on voodoo). So it's full of the usual stereotypical bullshit that's really just a little too far-fetched.
It's got a fairly predictable outcome, although the ultimate ending is a little unexpected, and quite pleasant.
To be honest, it's not really worth watching, unless you're really bored. It's not scary, and it doesn't mess with your mind, and aside from Kate Hudson's skimpy undies, there's little else going on.
