You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Stealth

the one line review:

flight of the navigator on steroids

the overview

The trailers for this film made it look like the epitomy of cheesey shite that ought to be avoided at all costs. So why did I rent it? Why not. It has Jessica Biel in it.

the plot:

A few years in the future and the US Navy have developed a fleet of spangly new fighter jets. Three pilots get selected to fly them and it's all good. Until some bright spark figures out how to fly the new planes unmanned - i.e., by a computer. So they make one, and the UCAV (Unmanned combat aerial vehicle or summat) joins the other 3 in the fight against terrorists. Until one day it gets hit by lightning and goes beserk. And the others have to stop it.

the verdict:

This film is somewhere in the middle of Flight of the Navigator and 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you remember either of those films, you'll spend most of the film saying either "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that" or "Hehehehehehehe" in a ridiculously annoying laugh. There's no escaping it.

But if you actually bother to watch the film, it's not that bad. Yes - it's full of cheese. Yes - it's God Bless America. Yes - it makes you want to hurl. Yes - Jessica Biel is quite hot.

It's embarassing really - the three best-of-the-best fighter pilots they have - wise-talking breaks the rules all-American white boy, token Black guy and a woman. Puuuhleease.

The cinematography is amazing, but in places the GDI let's the film down a bit.

The inevitably point at which our hero gets in the unmanned Stealth jet and flies it was, well, inevitable.

But given the right mood, there's just enough in it to make it watchable.
