You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Tears of the Sun

the one line review:

bruce willis... bang bang... yawn

the overview

Warning: This film will depress the shit out of you. I forget whether or not anyone actually smiles in it. Admittedly, it's not supposed to be a particularly happy movie, but still.

the plot:

Brucey plays a Special Ops commander sent into the Nigerian jungle to find a Dr. (Bellucci) who needs to be evacuated before the nasty Nigerian militia come in and kill them all. When Bruce and his team arrive there, turns out the Dr. won't leave unless he takes the 70 or so people at the missionary with them. He reluctantly agrees.

They wander through the jungle a bit, until they reach the evacuation point, where there are only 2 helicopters waiting. Defying his mission orders, Bruce decides to walk the missionaries through the jungle hero style into Cameroon and save the day.

On the way, they get chased by the nasty terrorist militant chaps who try to blow the shit out of them.

the verdict:

From the same ilk of the likes of Black Hawk Down, Shaving Ryan's Privates, this is a war (ish) film centred around one mission that goes wrong. Bruce plays the hero commander who defies his orders and does "the right thing". It's like every other film of this genre, just with the location changed.

It's very bang bang, very explosive, lots of "hard men be hard" scenes. Bruce does a good job as the coldhearted commander who puts his men's lives at jeopardy to save the lives of a few random Nigerians. Bellucci is quite hot.

It's a good film, but not a great film. Maybe because these types of films are seemingly ubiquitous at the moment, that I was a bit bored by a bit. Worth a watch, indeed, and is pretty graphic in places, but it won't top any charts.
