about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Terminator

the one line review:

Da da dah dah dah. Da dah dah da dah.

the overview

If like me, you saw this when you were about 7, then I'm guessing you also didn't sleep for most of your teenage years. This is a classic, frightening to the very core.

the plot:

IN the future, the machines have taken over the planet. Basically they're annihiliating the human race and generally not being very nice. These machines are the Cyborgs, or, erm "Cybernetic Organisms" - pretty much robots with skin.

Anyway, there is one fella who comes up with a way to destroy the Cyborgs, so in a fit of desperation they send back a T99 (a terminator... step up Arnie) through time (yep, time travel no less) to kill his mother before she has him. Luckily, the humans are able to send back a, um, human, to protect her.

Cue lots of very scary moments with lots of weapons. Not that many explosions, really, since this film was made in 1984 (see T2 for that...).

the verdict:

This is a classic. You should own it, really. Being old it was another stepping stone for true scary film making. In fact its not so much scary, it's more fuck your head up stuff.

Arnie is chilling. He is very very scary. There's a bit where he chops his own eye out. It was actually the perfect role for him - I mean he doesn't say much, but when he does...eeeshk! This film is famous for the "I'll Be Back" line.

Michael Biehn also made his mark in this film (as the human sent back to try to stop the Terminator). Unfortunately it was pretty much his only mark as he was forced to make utter tosh such as Cherry Falls later on in his so-called career.

And Linda Hamilton is great as Sarah Connor. Probably a bit scarier in T2 but still...

Anyway this is a awesome film. It only cost $6m to make (huge amount of money, then) but it really kicks ass.

You don't necessarily have to add it to your collection, but it's definitely a Friday night, switch all the lights of cower behind the couch thing.

Arnie. Eek.
