You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

The Grudge

the one line review:

to me, a grudge is nothing more than a place to park your car

the overview

I don't get scared a lot. In fact, in recent years, I haven't seen a film which has genuinely scared me. Aside from that scene with the bath tub in What Lies Beneath, recent horror films have been crap. Of the two that stick to mind of being of any merit, they're both Japanese. The Ring, and this.

the plot:

When someone dies under really nasty circumstances, then a curse is born which will forever enact its revenge on people who come into contact with it. Or words to that effect.

A husband kills her wife, child and cat, and himself, when he finds out that she is in love with another man. The Grudge is placed on the house in which they all die. When new people move into the house 3 years later, they experience some very creepy goings on.

the verdict:

I'm not going to say anymore on the plot because I don't want to give too much away. But this film is genuinely chilling. I actually wouldn't call it scary, but it certainly has enough to give you a real case of the willies.

It's actually a remake of the original Japanese version. It's funny really, because in the DVD extras, the director is going on about how Americans wouldn't watch the original, because, essentially, they'd be too stupid to understand it. So this is a Hollywoodised version for those poor Americans to watch. Bless 'em.

Anyway, you must watch this film. It's dark, and it's totally chilling. It's jumpy in places, but this is more of a psycho mindbender than a jumping out of your seat sort of film. I watched it late at night, in the dark, on my own, and by the end of it I was happy to be able to put the lights back on and had to watch some normal TV before going to bed. It's that good at messing with your mind.

Not many films will get a 5 bums rating here, but this does. Only just mind, but really, if you're looking for a creepy film, watch this little beauty.
