about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

The Intrepreter

the one line review:

nicole... ohhhhh momma...

the overview

I like Sean Penn. I lurrrrve Nicole Kidman. What more could I ask for from a film?

the plot:

It's all about a fictitious African country called Matobo. It's never said, but the similarities with Zimbabwe are uncanny. Why? Because Matobo has a vicious dictator leader who likes killing people, genocide style. Mugabe anyone? When an interpreter at the UN (Kidman) overhears a plot to assassinate said leader, the secret service send Sean Penn to check her out, and generally look after a bit.

the verdict:

Some of it is entirely predictable - there's the inevitable love interest between Penn and Kidman. But there's a lot in the story that really makes this film work. Other than Kidman that is. Who, I have to say, is looking as foxy as ever. I'm meaning like daaammmmnn. She a yummy mummy. Even if you hate the plot of the film, you could watch this film just for her. She's beautiful.

I could blabber on about the other merits of the film (because there are plenty) but I won't bother. Why? Because the plotline is worth watching on its own merit, but with Kidman thrown in for good merit, you can't go far wrong.
