You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

The Longest Yard

the one line review:

funny shawshank redemption

the overview

Adam Sandler films are Adam Sandler films - kind of funny, have the edge over Ben Stiller films which are just shite, but ultimately, they're all the same - same jokes, some predictable outcomes, same watchable feel.

the plot:

Sandler plays Paul Crewe, a washed up NFL star whose career when down the bog after he got caught rigging a game. After getting sent to prison for drink driving, the American Football mad head of the prison persuades him to coach a side to play against the guards in a season warmer. Crewe goes about recruiting the team, who are all total nutjobs who relish the chance to take a piece out of the guards.

the verdict:

With Chris Rock co-starring and having a fairly heavy hand in its production, I'd guess, this film has taken a direction that most Chris Rock films do. The film is full of stereotypes - the big, black, musclebound convicts, the male women of the prison, the over-zealous prison guards... lalala.

Completely and utterly predictable, no surprises. What really makes this film is the cast though - there are a lot of faces in it you wouldn't associate with movies, half of WWE for starters - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Kevin Nashfor one. Nelly is also in it, plus Burt Reynolds and even a quick cameo from Rob Schneider.

What's slightly annoying about Adam Sandler films is that they try and stick a moral in. Pah. Watch it if you're bored, or in the mood for something easy, silly and with big muscly men.
