about

You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.

You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.

Two Weeks Notice

the one line review:

typical huge grant

the overview

(Yes, I meant to write Huge up there. It's supposed to be comedy.)

Hugh Grant films are 10 a penny. Whatever that means. They're all the same. Same tired reliance on his overacted typical British ways and "Tim nice but Dim" -esque demeanour. He's still lovable in an affable sort of way, but if you're about to rent this, don't expect anything particularly inventive.

the plot:

She's (Bullock) an attorney (or as we call them in England, lawyer) who works for the little people doing pro bono and legal aid stuff. All about the community (Jenny from the Block stylee) and saving the people. He's (Grant) the pretty face of evil construction firm that keeps ripping down delightful old buildings that have an inkling of history and use and making wads of cash from it.

She gets hired as his attorney-cum-PA-cum-servant and he falls in love with her (and her him).

the verdict:

It's actually not that bad. Well, enjoyable in a Hugh Grant film sort of a way. That is, it's another Hugh Grant film and he does exactly what he does in all his other films. Sandra Bullock, who generally speaking is a pretty shocking actress (even if she's quite fit) does alright as the slightly ditsy but very good attorney.

The film doesn't have the charm and grace of Notting Hill or Four Weddings, nor the impact of Bridget Jones (1, not 2) but it's nevertheless a fairly easy going, don't need to concentrate too much, just sit back and fall asleep kind of a film.

Worth watching, if you like this sort of a thing.
