the overview
This is your run of the mill US comedy teen flick, with all the usual morals, slapstick jokes, funny gags, and men gagging. It's American Pie (with a bit of Road Trip) meets Ave Ventura. And it's not bad.
the plot:
Ryan Reynolds plays Van Wilder, a guy who's been at college for 7 years, and never graduated. He's the ultimate party animal, revered and respected around campus for his ability to throw amazing parties. Tara Reid is the stunning school journalist who's assigned to cover him as a story for the college newspaper. After his Dad stops paying his tuition, we follow Van as he attempts to earn his tuition fees by organising parties for people. Alas, he gets expelled from college, and has to plead with the governors to be reinstated on the condition that he sits his final in a bid to graduate and leave college.
the verdict:
There's nothing new here. The concept is fairly unoriginal, but in the typical genre of college flicks, it does OK. Put it this way, if you liked American Pie/Road Trip/Scary Movie, then you'll not go far wrong with this film.
Reynolds is good as Van Wilder, bringing to the role a weird Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura wackiness. Which works nicely.
The film is filled with the usual array of penis/semen/sex jokes, and plenty of gratuitous boob and bum shots (never a chore). Tara Reid looks fairly tasty as usual, though TBH, I've never really rated her - she's too blonde bimbo Daddy's girl for my taste.
The synopsis is simple - if you like this sort of film, then it's worth a watch. It does have funny moments in it, and it will keep you entertained for the duration.
