You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
yawny non-horror flick
It's slow, boring, dull and badly done. There's no urgency, and the scary bits aren't scary.
Jonathon Rivers (Keaton) lives an ideal life (blah) with his wife, who one day mysteriously disappears, by, well dying. Shortly after he gets a visit from a fella who reckons he can hear and communicate with the dead via EVP. Keaton gets obsessed with this in a bid to hear from his wife and find out what happens. Turns out that the dead are actually talking to him before they die, via his wife, who is trying to tell him what's gonna happen so he can help them before they die. Uh-huh. Anyway, can he *yawn* find a missing woman before she's killed by her abductors. Who knows it.
In principle it's not a bad plot. EVP is an allegedly real phenomenon. This film attempts to explore our relationship with the afterlife. But it does a pretty shit job. Keaton isn't a good actor (even after Batman...). The rest of the cast put in reasonable performances, but all round, this is a disappointing film which doesn't really go anywhere. It attempts to spook you with some jumpy ghosty scary bits, but it doesn't work.
Not worth renting, this film should be forgotten about, quickly.
