You're reading a really old version of matt-thornton's website. For example, if you're looking at the movie reviews... you'll notice that none of them are of recent films. Indeed, I leave them here for posterity's sake, but I doubt very much that they'll get updated anytime soon. So have a giggle.
You might, if you're lucky, find something recent from Matt at his blog matt's debates. Kernow bys vyken.
James Bond meets Austin Powers
I saw this when it first came out and loved it. I watched it again last night in prepartion for watching xXx2 and realised that actually, it ain't all that hot.
Vin Diesel is xXx some madman mercenary who's actually a nice guy pulling off vigilante stunts in hunt of freedom for the people. Word. He is drafted by the NSA to infiltrat Anarchy 99, a terrorist group in Prague who is planning to destroy a bunch of world cities to bring down civilisation.
That's about it.
There are plenty of great stunts, lot's of explosions and plenty of gratuitous hard man scenes. Vin Diesel does well.. this is his sort of role (similar to the Fast and the Furious). In fact near enough identical, but in this he's the good guy as opposed to gang leader bloke.
But really, it's cheesy. It starts off really quite slick, but by the end it's almost laughable. You hear yourself saving things like "Start the unnecessary slow moving dipping mechanism" and "No, Mr. Powers, I expect them to die" and bringing your little finger up to the side of your mouth.
It's definitely watchable, but frankly, it's a bit silly and not all that great. Watch it for the stunts, but just don't take it seriously. Apparently the sequel is even more cheesy than the first, so I'm going to wait for that out on DVD instead of lashing a fiver down at the cinema.
