Introduction

Here follows a complete walkthrough to The da Vinci code.

If you don't want the answers, don't continue!

This is the original and best da Vinci code walkthrough on the web! Ignore the people who just lift my work!

Question 1

OK, nice easy starter for 10. Just Da Vinci's first name.

Leonardo.

Question 2

Slightly more difficult. It's all in the words. Look carefully enough (or simply mouseover the words) and you'll be able to rearrange the words to make:

"You seek a famous fresco in Milan"

which is The Last Supper (probably DaVinci's most famous painting).

Gate Number 1

To solve this, simply highlight the text in the grey box and put it into a word processor (such as Word). This will bring out:

Well done, my friend, I sense your heart is true. You now have earned the right to your next clue: The Mona Lisa's dwelling once housed kings. A lavish Paris palace with three wings. One wing is Sully... one is Richelieu. Please name the third (I've mentioned only two)

So it's asking for the third of the three wings where the Mona Lisa was stored - the lavish Paris Palace being the Louvre.

A quick Google search brings up Denon as being the answer.

Gate Number 2

It's all in the clue... These twenty five letters a perfect square

You need to rearrange the 25 letter sequence into a 5 by 5 grid.

WTRGO
WRTDT
WOLOC
DBANO
OENDM

and read that out and you get wwwdotrobertlangdondotcom.

That is the second gate complete. You do not have to put anything in an input box, or answer any questions or anything like that as you do with the other gates so PLEASE don't email me asking where the box is - there is no freaking box to put the answer in! (incidentally, if there was, what answer would you put in there? Exactly. Point made)

UPDATE: 22/07/05
Oh for the love of God. I'm not sure I can say this ANY MORE CLEARLY.

There is no box to write an answer in for this gate. The answer you have is a web address. The way to complete this guide is to go to that web address. That web address is www.robertlangdon.com. Click that link and you have successfully mastered gate 2. DON'T F*&^ING email me about this gate.

Notice that when you move onto other parts of the quest you see the same 6 symbols at the very top of the page that gradually get filled in - with there being 6 gates and 6 symbols... maybe there's a correlation? ;)

Onwards to the next gate!

Gate Number 3

Go to www.robertlangdon.com.

Click on the contact button at the bottom right.

Send an email to questions@robertlangdon.com. You'll receive an autoresponse back:

Thank you for writing. I apologize for this automated response, but I am currently in Florence attempting to locate the key to "The Prophecy" - an encoded parchment that may have been written by Leonardo Da Vinci. I will respond to your message upon my return.

Sincerely,

Robert Langdon

Jonas,

If this is you, DON'T erase this email - I can only send it once. Something terrible has happened. I was attacked outside my hotel, and the parchment was stolen! I think the thieves intend to auction it on-line. I don't have reliable web access here, and I need your help. You must find this auction immediately and track down the parchment. Here are the two best art-related auction sites:

http://www.auctionport.com
http://www.relic-bay.com

When you search, you should definitely include the initials "LSPDV" because they are so rare. Please do everything in your power to locate the parchment soon - I must get it back. I'm getting very close to uncovering the key to the code.

- Robert

Ignore the first website, and go to relic-bay. In the input box enter LSPDV.

That is gate number 3 cracked...

Gate Number 4

Click the banner at the bottom of the page for the Depository Bank of Zurich.

In the input box on the left, enter Marie Denarnaud

The password is actually the Fibonacci sequence, which is 1123581321.

From the following page, you need to go to www.doubleknightbooks.com (actual location).

Here, send an email to jfaukman@doubleknightbooks.com - which again is an autoresponder. You get the following back:

Thank you for your inquiry. I'm currently editing out of the office but I'll get back to you as soon as I return. Robert, if this is you please leave me a message on our employee message board (use my name to login). I've reset the password to something we both know - the name of the city where we had our photo taken together recently.

So click Enter Our Site (top left) then, employee message board and use Jonas Faukman as the login name and Venice as the password.

Click on message number 4, which is Jonas I've got the key which reveals this link:

http://www.robertlangdon.com/secretpage.htm.

UPDATE: 07/07/2004... A lot of people have been asking me how I figured out the password was Venice. Funnily enough I can't remember. I seem to remember there being a really deadset reason. However, if you look on this page, you'll see the picture of Jonas and Robert celebrating at the Venetian carnival - and of course Venetian means from Venice... also, if you right click and "Save Image As" then the image name is "langdoninvenice.jpg"... so that'll do for me... :p

Gate Number 5

You are asked for Robert's favourite symbol. Visit his website (robertlangdon.com) and it's the two symbols at the top of the page.

This is an ankh.

Enter this word on the input screen,

Gate Number 6: The Prophecy

You now have access to the prophecy and a copy of the key to decipher it.

Look at the parchment which is the "key". The letters and numbers are divided up into a sort of noughts and crosses board. So in the top left you have ABCD, middle top EFGH, top right IJKL etc. OK, now look at the other parchment which is the prophecy. You'll see a lot of little rectangles with dots on them. You'll also notice that some of these rectangles have parts of the border missing - this is used to indicate which one of the noughts and crosses grid you're looking at. Then quite simply, the position of the dot tells you which letter or number you need. So if you have a rectangle with all sides intact, you're looking at the centre block of the key. If you've got a rectangle with no top (but left, right and bottom borders) you're looking at the top row in the middle.

Hey presto, the prophecy reads:

The truth will be told in 2003.

You are then presented with a screen saying that someone has recorded you a special message, with a US phone number to call. If you want to know exactly what it says, call it. If you don't, here's pretty much the gist, the message coming from Dan Brown::

Congratulations on finishing the quest. Make sure you read the da Vinci code while I'm working on the next Robert Langdon book.

Potential Scandal!

After doing a bit of digging about, it turns out that there is quite an argument that the da Vinci code is a complete plagiarism of an earlier book called, Daughter of God by Lewis Perdue.

Here are some links if you want to learn more about it and make up your own mind!

Oursbrun blog, Daughter of God at Amazon and the Daughter of God website.

This might be a null point, but I'm aware that the publishers of Dan Brown's books have recently reissued all of his books with new covers, including the da Vinci Code. I have a feeling that the clues/codes etc. for the DVC aren't on the new covers and so the quest will be a bit misleading. In order to get the clues, you need the original copy of the book with the red cover.

However, images of the covers are available as part of the quest (on the quest website) so it is still possible (even though really hard to see).

If people ask nicely enough, I might be persuaded to take high res digital photos of the cover and put them up on the site... :)
