Introduction

If you enjoyed my guide to the first da Vinci code, then here is my guide to the second da Vinci code.

This is the original and best da Vinci code walkthrough on the web. Ignore all those people who just steal my work!

N.B. Thanks to everyone who has contacted me thanking me for this guide. To all those people who have emailed me with abuse about the morality of posting this guide on the web - please - save your energy. The number of people who are pleased to have this guide far outweigh you and as I originally stated:

If you don't want the answers, don't continue!

If you do feel the need to insult me, I would be most grateful if you could come up with something original and vaguely imaginative. Abuse such as calling me ugly/gay/stupid/wanker will not command any respect. Additionally, levelling your abuse by trying to sound intellectually superior (commonly through the use of big words, clever speech and setting me challenges) rarely has the intended result (especially if you're too ignorant to include a valid email address for me to respond to).

Question 1

What is the more common name of Leonardo DaVinci's famous painting "La Giaconda"?

Pretty simple... The Mona Lisa.

Question 2

In what city does The Mona Lisa reside?

Again, pretty simple. Paris (she's in the Louvre...).

Question 3

To what secret society did Jacques Sauniere belong?

Jacques Sauniere was the curator at the Louvre. He was a member of the Priory of Sion.

Code No.1

What enigmatic sculpture stands one degree north of the location indicated in the code?

OK, this was actually by far the hardest question in the whole bloody thing. First things first, find the code...

It's next to comment #4 on the back cover. Get it the right way round (by looking at it in a mirror) and it reveals:

37 degrees 57 minutes 6.5 seconds North 77 degrees 8 minutes 44 seconds West.

If you add a degree north and Google that, about the second entry should be a listing for abcnews. Hit that link and you should get a page not found error. This is what stumped the hell out of me. However, using Google's handy dandy cache facility it brings the page up. With a little ingenuity, it turns out the answer is Kryptos.

UPDATE 22/02/2004: it seems the abcnews.com page I was linking to has disappeared off the face of the web. So instead look at this - Elonka's Kryptos page.

Onwards to code 2...

Code No.2

According to Kryptos, what are the initials of the person "who knows the exact location"?

By having a look through the available sites on Kryptos, the obvious answer is:

WW.

It's also on the back cover of the book in the "torn" section - turn it upside down where it says "only WW knows".

Many say that the initials WW stand for William Webster, who was the director of the CIA when Kryptos was installed.

Code No.3

If you are bold, the font of truth appears. Using the images available on the site, look inside the covers of the book and reconstruct the phrase based on the letters that are bolded.

Is there no help for the widow's son

Code No. 4

[with reference to "is there no help for the widow's son"]

For what brotherhood (still active today) does this phrase have special meaning?

This is again another Google job - a little detective work, and... hey presto:

Free Masons.

Code No. 5

OK, almost there...

N.B. To the tosser who said I was thick for my method of figuring it out because he was able to simply "flick over a nickel and it was right there" - in case you didn't realise you numpty, I'm not American (I'm English) and we have our own currency over here, y'know.

You need to use what is known as a Caesar box. For more info. check out the Crypto 101 section of Dan Brown's website (funnily enough just finding that part of his website is mission enough! I let you try...). If you did the first DVC then you'll know what I'm talking about because you needed it to find the website of Robert Langdon.OK on the back cover of the book is a very faint seal, down near the barcode. It has a load of numbers. Each of the numbers corresponds to the first letter of that chapter (so no.13 means first letter of chapter 13, for example).

Pick out all thirteen letters and arrange them, like so:

EUUN
^RSU
PI^M
LBU^

(where the ^ is the little pyramid thingy with the eye in the number sequence). This is a Caesar box. Just read down and there's your answer.

E Pluribus Unum. Pop that in and you're all done. Nearly.

Final code

They give you some crap about the Great Seal, and then tell you to click on Mona's "oeil droit".

In French, "oeil droit" means "right eye". So click on her right eye (i.e. the one on the left).

This code was originally a contest with a prize, but that closed ages ago, so now it's all for fun. I did get an email from someone saying they won it with my help. But they didn't give cough up any dollar, so I'm guessing it was a hoax.

My riddle (#1)

Here's a very simple (and quite obscure) little riddle of my own. There is only one question.

It is:

There is something not quite right with this guide. What is it?

[ Hint 1 ] [ Hint 2 ] [ Hint 3 ]

Guesses on the back of an email...

My riddle (#2)

I just thought of a new riddle, so figured I'd put it here.

Dan Brown and myself, are (very tenuously) linked. How?

This is also as, if not more, obscure than the first riddle. Apologies, really, because it's a crap riddle, but hey.

[ Hint 1 ] [ Hint 2 ] [ Hint 3 ]

da Vinci code FAQ

Here are the most common questions/emails I get, so save yourself some time and check to see if yours is here before contacting me. Additionally, please check the lovemail, hatemail, idiotmail and comments board.

N.B. I get a load of my replies bouncing back to me, so if you want a reply, please make sure your email address is valid...

1. Where is gate x?/I'm stuck on x.../How do I get past x?
All the answers you need are in the guide. Please don't email and ask how to do a particular gate or question, because I won't reply.

2. Where is the actual code on the web?
www.thedavincicode.com - but if you have to ask me that (i.e. couldn't use or were lazy to use Google to find it) then don't be surprised if you get a very sarcastic email from me.

3. Emails written in an entirely other language.
Whilst I am able to use Babel Fish to translate them, I'd prefer not to. This website is written in English, so I'd prefer it if you wrote to me in English.

4. Illiterate/geek speak/text speak/one line shite
If you can't be bothered to write me a proper email, then I can't be bothered to reply to you.

5. Who are you? How old are you? What job do you do? etc.
Pretty much any question that I will answer can be answered by browsing my website. If you sound hot and female I might reply, but otherwise I probably won't.

6. Great book! When are you writing another?
I didn't write the book. Dan Brown did. More info on the author of the book at his his website.

7."i want to now more abaut the code of da vinci"... or similar
In the words of Twin Town: "F*ck off, I'm busy."

8. Thanks for the putting this guide up!!
You're welcome...

If you're number 8 (or someone else) then please feel free to contact me.

Digital Fortress code (aka "Ultimate Code")

After my guide to the da Vinci code, a number of people asked me to post the solution to the Digital Fortress/Ultimate code printed in the back of the Digital Fortress book and on Dan Brown's website, under "ultimate code".

You do need the book in front of you so for those without it, here is the solution. Incidentally, I recommend buying Digital Fortress, I think it's better than the da Vinci code.

Here is the code:

128-10-93-85-10-128-98-
112-6-6-25-126-39-1-68-78

Each of those numbers refers to a chapter number. Find each chapter and write down the first letter of the first sentence of the first paragraph... this spells out....

wecgewhyaaiortnu

This is another Caesar's Box type thingy, so rearrange them, to get:

wecg
ewhy
aaio
rtnu

Now, this doesn't read like a Caesar's Box normally does. But I think you can figure it out.

Pretty creepy, huh?

UPDATE: 31/08/2004 Oh for the love of God. I honestly despair and worry about the human population. The number of emails I get from people who still can't figure the code out, even though I put the solution there plain as day. So, for the really really stupid (and I mean really really really stupid, which includes you "Sally") people reading this... here is the answer. Blimey.

1) Open your eyes
2) Learn how to read (I'm guessing you know how to do this, but it really wouldn't surprise me)
3) Look at the grid of letters below (which incidentally, is an exact copy of the one above, so don't panic):

wecg
ewhy
aaio
rtnu

4) Now, read DOWN the columns, starting at the left, working over to the right. So..

w
e
a
r

then

e
w
a
t

then

c
h
i
n

then

g
y
o
u

5) If it helps, write all those letters out in a big long list. Assuming you know how to write, you should end up with something that looks a little like this:

wearewatchingyou

6) If all is going to plan, you should be able to strategically place some spaces in there. Taking nothing for granted, here it is:

we are watching you

That my friends is the answer to the puzzle.

Just for fun, I made one up. It's a little different, but should be decipherable. For those who think they've solved it, or are too lazy to try and solve it, the answer is somewhere on this page.

Code:

!iyry!plea!ulrh!tauadseoh

Flattery...

It seems people enjoy ripping off my work and copyright notices mean nothing. Well I've found at least one DVC guide which is clearly just lifted off my site. Time to name and shame (i'm not going to link properly to 'cos I'm not improving their pagerank by lending them some of mine!):

Seen others? Do you have a Da Vinci Code guide, or information, thoughts or discussion about the DVC? Let me know!

Some people have done it the right way! Admittedly I only stumbled over these (if you ARE linking or using my work, let me know!), but it seems I've made it all over the place, including a Powerpoint presentation!

Want to link to me? Do link to me? Seen someone linking to me? Let me know.

:)

Deception Point code

People keep asking for this, and I thought it was already here. Anyway:

The Code

1-V-116-44-11-89-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-130-28-116-32-44-133-U-130

The answer

As per usual, each of the numbers are a chapter, and you take the first character from that chapter:

T V C I R H I O L F E N D L A D C E S C A I W U E

Rearrange them into a 5x5 Caesar box:

TVCIR
HIOLF
ENDLA
DCESC
AIWUE
